The Dog with the long Tooth!!!

PARIS, FRANCE  1998

My father Roger E Frankling worked for the Rabbit Board and we lived in the Rabbitors home in Green Valley, nearby Shag Valley

Station from 1972-1973. We then lived in Macraes Flat from 1974-1977. My father also worked for John Sutton on his farm in

Moonlight. ( According to my father, John Sutton was always a real gentleman!! ).  I do remember his young family when I went to

Macraes “Moonlight” primary school in the early 1970’s. I also remember the extreme cold weather with lots of snow up on the

high country.

There were stories of the landrover belonging to the Rabbit Board that rolled off the top of the hill without the driver. ( Some body

forgot to put on the handbrake!! ) It could have been Gordon Boon, Ron Moyle, Charlie Struthers or Bob Sands??.  geez - It was not

a pretty site!!.

I also remember my Father falling off his horse in 1976 because his mate Ron Jenkins ( Fencing Contractor ) was a bit loose with the

dynamite…

As a small boy I have great memories playing in the wool sheds on Shag valley station with the other children or just picking chestnuts

near our place in Green valley. I also have fond memories of going hunting with my father up on the hills. I was happy whenever Dad

came home with a baby rabbit or a possum in his coat pocket. There was something special living in the countryside, sitting in front of

the fire place, or just drinking a hot “cup of tea” in the kitchen or taking the dog for a walk in the long wet tussock grass. Some of my

other memories include watching the shepherds mustering the sheep and cattle at Shag valley station or up by Moonlight near Macraes

flat.

Johnny Bell the owner of Shag valley station in 2015 might remember Mrs Campbell our teacher at Dunback primary school in the

1970’s?. ( She was always very friendly.) I use to catch the school bus from the front of the main gates of Shag valley station on

highway N°85.

Some local history:

The first radio transmission from New Zealand to England was sent from Shag Valley Station, Otago New Zealand in 1924.

It was always a nice drive from Green Valley to Naseby and Ranfurly. I remember the extreme weather and lots of snow up on the mountain range. Our place was on the right of this photo with a small river and lots of fruit trees. The house was uplifted and moved to Dunback in 1973.

Jaimie Daniels (on the motorbike) Nauru, Central Pacific 1980

My little friend Jaimie Daniels from Perth, Australia and I went to school together at Aiwo primary

school on Nauru. On the weekends we use to explore the island on the phosphate trains or go looking

for war relics left over from WW11. On many occasions we came home with a tonne of bullets and

mortars and even found a barrel of a 50 caliber machine gun. Jaimie and I also discovered a japanese

hospital bunker near the buada lagoon. We had to crawl on our hands and knees because the bunker

was completely covered by the jungle. After some digging we found a lot of Japanese medicine bottles.

( His dad Phil Daniels was in charge of filling the airlines on Nauru with fuel back in the 1970's )

My Father, Roger E Frankling had been employed by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation ( 1977-1981 ).   HARBOUR MASTER: CAPTAIN  P.G.HOILES – ( 1979 ).  As a Stevedore Supervisor he was in charge of a gang of  13 – Pacific Islanders supervising them in all aspects of marine work carried out by the department including the assisting of the Harbour Master.  Roger Frankling was also in charge of the general maintenance of the marine gear. As a certified Marine Diver  he was in charge of all operations as required for the mooring changes. My Dad’s most favourite ships on Nauru were  the supply & phosphate vessels - M.V EIGAMOIYA / M.V VALETTA.

Roger E Frankling then moved on to become a Stevedore Manager for Rabaul Stevedores – Kieta / Bougainville /

Papua New Guinea ( 1981-1989 ). All exports / imports - transport, merchandise, cocoa, copra & general cargo usually went through the Kieta port. My Dad always did enjoy a cup of tea & friendly chat with Captain Vic Fisher on the M.V LAE CHIEF & with his friend Mr Bob Strong, manager of the Toberoi plantation. ( The Legendary Mr Bob Strong was also the Transport Manager for Rabaul Stevedores ). Roger sadly passed away on the Isle of Wight, U.K ( 2001 ).  I am looking for old photos / post-cards / great memories from anybody who lived and worked on Nauru and Bougainville in the 1970’s & 1980’s.

I read on the PNG islands / Ships Nostalgia website that the M.V Lae Chief sank in the Guayas River, Equador on the 25th November 2000. There is a couple of nice photos of this little red ship in Alotau, Milne bay, PNG on this interesting website.

Checkout my website: Mark L Frankling flickr / Nauru / Culture, Geography & History… ( 1977-1981 ) I was close friends with Paul Harris and Marcus Stephens. ( Paul J Harris is the son of the late president Lagumot Harris ) and Marcus Stephens was the future president of the Republic of Nauru…

some shipping nostalgia...

My father with his young family  immigrated to New Zealand on the SS Southern Cross in 1971. It sailed from Southampton,

( U.K ) to Cape Town ( South Africa ) then on to Australia and New Zealand. It continued through the Pacific to Europe sailing through the  Panama canal. We have fond memories of the elderly  couple, Mr & Mrs James, who lived  in Manurewa, New Zealand. They both  traveled with us from the U.K in 1971. We were also very pleased to stop in Australia for a cup of tea with our great aunt Hilda.

I lived and worked in Manly as a Chef with my good

friend  Chas Ruffles at the Café Steyne  and Romans

Italian Restaurant, 1990-1994.  ( I would just like to

say a big “Hello” to Lyndsay Moynham ! )

I also worked at the  Manly Fish Market & Café

owned by Andrew Hill from 1995-1996.

We lived in an  apartment in the red building  owned by

Mr Phil Newman above the Manly Surf Club on the left

of this photo.   At the end of the the 1990’s, I was living

next  door to the  legendary Joe Alagich in Queenscliff.

20/129 Bower Street, Manly 1992

It was a nice walk to Shelly beach and the Bower head in

Manly. The path began at the Manly Surf Club below our apartment…

Chas Ruffles might remember his  friend Lance who was

a surfer  & a good chef at the Bower restaurant at Shelly

beach. I remember Midge  and myself hanging our heads

out the window at 20/129 bower street to see if there was

anything  to surf.  We both nearly got  bolted by lightning.

The very loud bang set off all the car alarms in Manly.

Other memorable moments was seeing “Fred the Surfer”

being towed along the Manly Corso on his skateboard by

his dog using a surfboard rope…

It was Andrew Hill from Manly that gave us his dive gear and

a map to  Seal rocks. I remember  the surf being a bit lousy but

we  really did enjoy the  snorkling and swimming. I will  never

forget when Ciaran and myself  went fishing out on the estuary

late in  the evening. ( Well we got it wrong on the timing! ) The

tide left us stranded in mud up to our knees and we had to drag

the boat back to shore. The problem was that I did not like the

look of those giant Australian mud crabs!

Manly Surf Pavilion, Sydney, N.S.W, Australia 1992

We lived in 20/129 Bower street in Manly. You can see our opened window in the

big red building. (3rd floor from the roof top)

I always did like the walk from the Manly Ferry to the spit bridge towards Seaforth.

You could stop at the Kiosk at the Clontarf Reserve for a sandwich and a cold drink.

The path started next to the Manly wharf and went through Fairlight and around

the Sydney Harbour National park.

My other favourite place to go for a swim and a barbecue was at Little Manly Point

with the view of the  sailing boats in the Sydney harbour. The scenic drive  up to the

North head and around the Bower near Shelly beach in Manly was also a great

place to go with your family…

( There were many free public barbecues by the beaches and in the National parks )

surfers )

I remember watching the Manly sea eagles (Australian

Rugby league) on tv at Brad’s place at Curl Curl beach

after work or going for a surf with Lyndsay. We often liked

something to eat at Tony’s Pizza on Darley road in Manly.

By the way I always did prefer the old “Manly-Warringah

era !

My friend Midge did tell me that it hit him hard when it was time to leave Australia. Today the Café Steyne famous

for its bacon & eggs breakfast and Sommi’s - Thai restaurant above the Café Steyne in Manly is gone… ( We did like

Asian food ) There was some excellent music too especially at the Manly Jazz Festival 1992.

There was also very good music at the Manly Boatshed on most nights with the Jamie Wilson Band being the crowds

favourite. There was loads of funk blues & jazz… ( Kevin Bennett & James Gillard, Jeff Duff and Glen Rhodes )

I heard a rumour that the food at the Old Manly Boatshed is still very good after all those years!.

Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney ( grunge rock bands from Seattle, US ) played on Triple J radio were

the favourites for most surfers from Manly to Sydney’s Northern beaches in the 1990’s.

Pearl Jam - “Alive” Ten LP 1991, Soundgarden -“Ugly Truth”/“Loud Love”/“Hands All Over” Louder than Love

The Hellmenn -“surf punk” band from Manly were famous for their surfer looks and skateboards. They often played

live at the Manly youth centre or in the back alley just behind Tim’s Aloha surf shop. These old punks have still got

good teeth!!

During a brief stay with my friends Steve Harriot, Kelly and her kids near Little Manly point in 1994, i remember my

brother Jeff and myself being woken up in the middle of the night to find Tim Farriss sitting around the kitchen table.

Manly Beach “The Surfer” Sydney, N.S.W, Australia. (1992)

I remember the legendary Anthony Neville & Rick surfing down at the Manly Surf

Club, by the afternoon  the wind and extreme ocean currents made the Manly surf very

dangerous… (Cyclone Daman-Australia).  The surf and swell did get much bigger than

this and it went on for a few days. It got very big over at the Fairy Bower next to Shelly

Beach (Manly) and Sydney’s Northern Beaches, many surfers lost their lives…

Anthony Neville still works at the  Manly Hospital. Rick was a waiter at the restaurant

on Manly wharf.  Rick owned the “Renegade” jeep  with no roof and lots of surfboards.

I have just been reminded by my old mate Ciaran Wilkins that this was “Big Wednesday”

memories from those good old days in Australia. “cheers Mate!!”

This was a party organised at their home in Warriewood by Julies parents, ( Ruthie

a few others from the Old Manly Boatshed in 1996.

Manly in 1992/93. Ciaran also has many  stunning photos and he was also an expert with

the video camera… The classic video recorders were real bulkies in those days!!

We had some big parties at 20/129 Bower street. There are some funny stories to be told

about  Tony Neville, Matt Bennell,  Andy Peterson,  Jon Vedelago, Chas Ruffles and  the

boys. ( geez - i better wait until i am 100 years old! ) Ciaran is already beginning to sense

a reunion!!

Giovanna Melito and her partner André from London,  England always came up with a

good party. We will  never forget  the Christmas party at Giovanna’s place over  at little

Chas Ruffles – Australia ( Rock Climber )

I use to do a lot of rock climbing in Sydney with my best

mate Chas Ruffles. I did not mind going up. It was the

getting down that i found very hard. On one occasion

Chas came crashing down off a 25 metre rock face

because Lara was holding the wrong rope! (Luckily no

body was seriously hurt) Chas Ruffles is a top chef and

he still enjoys rock climbing competitions.

Chas Ruffles now lives with his family in Goulburn

near Canberra, Australia.

I lived next door to my friend and work colleague Joe

Alagich at Lower Greycliff rd, Queenscliff in 1995/96.

His wife Mrs Olga Alagich was very friendly and she

use to help me out with my shopping ( clothes ) at the Warringah mall.

By the way Joe still owes me 50 bucks!! Joe is also a

long time friend of Andrew Hill. ( Manly Fish

Shipping Nostalgia  ( The British Merchant Navy 1962-1969 )

I was looking at my father’s seaman’s record book from 1962-1969.  Interesting to see the ships  that he was working on in the British merchant navy. He sailed many times around the cape of Africa and it was bloody freezing  in New York, he had  to kick the ice off the walls when he woke up in the  mornings! Back in those days the big ships had no modern stabilisers, so in places like the north sea in Scotland it was a bit of a roller coaster ride   on that huge swell. ( This was  the only  time he was a bit  worried of  sinking!! )    My father

Roger Earnshaw Frankling worked and sailed on 25 voyages.  My dad always said that Cape Town and the West Indies were the best looking ports in those days… I still think  that Cape Town in  South Africa is very pretty!

List of Ships:

“Sugar Producer” West Indies 23 june 1963

“MV Capetown Castle” 3 october 1963

“Mauretania” Liverpool , New York 10 december 1962

“South African Star” 29 february 1965

“Califournia Star” 13 jan 1965

“PARAGUAY STAR” Victoria docks 17 june 1964

“New Zealand Star” 6 december 1963

“Swallow” London 11/9/1965

“MV Glenwood” London 15 september 1965

“Tintagel Castle” Victoria docks 24/4/1966

“MV Medic” London 31 jan 1967

“MV Golfito” Glasgow 29/01/1969

“MV Cornwall” London 10/01/1966

“MV Sterling Castle” London 10 may 1963

“MV Windsor Castle” London 27 march 1963

“British Transport Commission”

  Southern region vessels 7/9/1962-8/4/1962

NOTES:

The MV Tintagel Castle use to sail the regular route down the west coast of South America. My father sailed on this ship  6 times in 1966-1967. Most of these classic ships have ended  up on the scrap yard or

they sunk!!  The MV Windsor Castle was brought and restored by “The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust”

in the United Kingdom.

Dave Frankling & Family (pro-surfer) Isle of Wight, England 1994

My uncle Dave had his photo taken for a surf magazine while surfing around the Isle of Wight.

He was a bit upset to discover a picture of only his hand after a spectacular wipe out on a huge

wave…

The headline was a better reading - David Frankling “local surfer”

wipes out!
